A map of the world by French mathematician Oronce Fine using a double cordiform (heart-shaped) projection, showing the northern hemisphere on the left side and the southern hemisphere on the right. The map clearly shows the early belief that the lands discovered in the new world were part of Asia, as North, Central, and South America are shown as extensions of the eastern edge of Asia. The Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies are clearly shown, and the peninsula of Florida is named. This map was frequently copied by other mapmakers, including Gerard Mercator. |
In 1702 Johann Baptist Homann founded the most important German map publishing firm during the 18th century. He quickly rose to prominence, and in 1715 he was appointed geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. After his death, his son Johann Christoph took over the business, and later the business was run under the name Homann Heirs (Homann Erben), and lasted into the next centuruy. Homann specialized in maps that could be sold unbound, or bound together in any configuration a customer chose, so that each Homan atlas was different. |
