This world map comes from Joan Blaeu's Atlas Maior, generally considered the finest atlas ever produced. The two hemispheres of the globe are adorned with allegorical figures along the bottom depicting the four seasons, celestial figures along the top, and portraits of the astronomers Galileo Galilei in the upper left and Tycho Brahe in the upper right. The map is also notable for its depiction of California as an island, a misconception that lasted throughout much of the 17th century. |
One of the most important British cartographers of the 18th century, Jefferys worked as the Geographer to the Prince of Wales, and later as Geographer to King George III. In his early work he produced comprehensive maps of England and Wales with scales down to 1 in. = 1 mile. His most important work started in the 1760s with his A general topography of North America and the West Indies, a fine collection of maps covering in great detail regions and cities from Canada to Mexico and the Caribbean. |
