(New and Accurate Map of the Entire World) This world map comes from Joan Blaeu's Atlas Maior, generally considered the finest atlas ever produced. The two hemispheres of the globe are adorned with allegorical figures along the bottom depicting the four seasons, celestial figures along the top, and portraits of the astronomers Galileo Galilei in the upper left and Tycho Brahe in the upper right. The map is also notable for its depiction of California as an island, a misconception that lasted throughout much of the 17th century.
