Faneuil Hall was built in 1742 as a marketplace and meeting place, and played an important role during the American Revolution as the site of several speeches by people, including Samuel Adams, encouraging independence from Britain.

Old Corner Bookstore, First Brick Building in Boston

The historic Old Corner Bookstore, located at the corner of Washington and School Streets in Boston, was built in 1718. In the nineteenth century it was a meeting place for writers, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Young's Residence on Million Dollar Pier

Location: Atlantic City, New Jersey

Year: 1906-1915

Artist: Detroit Photographic Co.

Built by Captain John Young in 1906, the Million Dollar Pier is so-called because he boasted it would cost a million dollars to build. He built the three-story Italianate villa as his residence, including a conservatory and classical statuary. Young's friend Thomas Edison designed the outdoor lighting.

Photographer Taking Picture of Group with Donkey at Crowded Beach

Photographers were often on hand at the beach and boardwalk in Atlantic City to take a photo of visitors. This photo shows one possibility: on a tired-looking donkey. The woman on the right holds a sign hat says, "I could stay in Atlantic City forever."

Brooklyn Bridge

A view of the pedestrian walkway on the upper level of the Brooklyn Bridge looking towards Manhattan. The bridge was completed in 1883 and was the first bridge across the East River to connect Manhattan to Brooklyn.

Luna Park at Night, Coney Island

A view of the famous night time light display at Luna Park. The lights were an impressive display at a time when electric lighting was still rare. Luna Park was an amusement park at Coney Island and ran from 1903 to 1944 when much of it was destroyed by fire.
