About This Map
Hermann's map of Virginia superseded John Smith's influential 1624 map as the definitive map of Virginia and Maryland and remained influential well into the 17th century. Many Indian place names from Smith's map are now replaced by English names, and numerous plantations have been added. The map also includes many descriptions of landforms, including rivers, swamps, and forests, as well as a portrait of Augustine Herrman.
