Care & Framing

How should I handle my print?

When handling your print, hold the paper by the edges. Never touch the printed surface, as oils on your hands could transfer to the print, potentially degrading the quality. Your print is reasonably resistant to scratches, but it is always best to handle it with care.

How should I store my print?

We recommend framing your print as soon as you can. If you don't plan to frame your print immediately, make sure to store it in an archival protective sleeve or an archival box. We always place prints in archival sleeves for protection before shipping. We recommend you keep this sleeve for storage. Store your print flat in a dark place away from sources of light.

How should I frame my print?

When framing your print, always use all acid-free materials, and for best protection we recommend that you use glass or acrylic with UV filtering. Never hang your print where it will receive any direct sunlight.

For the widest range of framing options, we recommend that you take your print to your local frame shop to purchase a custom frame. Frame shops usually have a very large selection of mats and frames, and will be able to size the materials exactly as you like. They also have the expertise to make sure you get the highest quality framing possible.

If your print is in a standard size (such as 8"x10", 11"x14", or 16"x20") and you want to purchase an off-the-shelf, standard-size frame, we recommend that you check out art supply stores in your area. Most art supply stores stock a wide range of ready-made frames.

There are also numerous online custom frame vendors that allow you to specify custom sizing for frames and mats. These frames are often less expensive than custom frames from a local frame shop, though more expensive than off-the-shelf frames from an art supply store. The quality of the materials is often on par with the best custom frame shops, and usually much better than what you can find in an art supply store. We highly recommend American Frame and Frame Destination.

Do you sell framed prints?

All of our prints come without any framing or mounting. At this time we do not offer any framing services.

Product Info

What kind of maps do you sell?

We make museum-quality, archival prints of modern and vintage-inspired map art based on our own unique designs. We also sell a number of antique map reproductions. We have maps of cities, US states, national parks, and more.

Are your prints archival?

Yes! All of our products are archival prints. We always print on 100% cotton, acid-free fine art papers with archival pigment inks. Our maps are printed on paper with a matte surface and have no gloss or sheen at all.

An archival print is one that is made of materials that are designed to preserve the print for as long as possible. The best materials for archival preservation: 1) are acid-free (acidic materials can cause discoloration and deterioration of paper), 2) are made with 100% cotton paper (cotton is considered to be one of the best archival materials for printed artwork), and 3) use pigment inks (pigment inks are made from naturally occurring ingredients, not from synthetic dyes, and as such are very stable and will resist changing or fading over time). If cared for and framed properly, our prints will last for generations with no noticeable fading or discoloration.

Can you customize prints?

We're happy to customize your print in any way you'd like. The most common customizations are changing the print size or border size from what is offered on our site. We can also alter the color and tone of a print, for example, to make it darker, lighter, more yellowed, etc. In most cases we can make alterations for free, though if you need something complex we may charge an extra fee for image preparation. Please contact us before you order to discuss whether we can produce what you need.

Can you create a new product for me?

We love a challenge! If you don’t find what you’re looking for in our shop, we may be able to create something new for you. Feel free to contact us with the details of what you’re looking for and we’ll let you know if it’s something we can make available for purchase. For original designs there may be an extra design fee in addition to the cost of the print. For antique map reproductions we can often find just the right antique map to make available as a print.

Do you sell framed prints?

All of our prints come without any framing or mounting. At this time we do not offer any framing services. Check out the Care & Framing section of the FAQ above for tips on how to frame your print.

Returns

What is your return policy?

If you're not fully satisfied with your print, you may return it within 14 days after the date of delivery. We will refund the full amount of the returned print minus the return shipping fee. Please contact us before you ship the print back to us so that we can set up a return label for you. We'll only be able to refund your order once we receive the returned print in its original condition. We recommend that you save all of the original packaging material to use to ship the print back to us.

You should expect to receive your refund within two weeks of giving your package to the return shipper, however, in most cases you will receive a refund more quickly. This time period includes the transit time for us to receive your return from the shipper (up to 5 days), and the time it takes your bank to process our refund request (up to 5 to 10 business days).

What happens if a print is damaged during shipping?

If you receive an item that is damaged on arrival or is materially different than the item you ordered, we will replace the item at no extra charge to you as long as you contact us within 14 days after receiving your order. We do our best to pack your order as safely as possible, but damage during shipment occasionally occurs. For damaged items, please retain all of the original packaging material as well as the damaged print, and contact us immediately. The shipper will ask for proof of damage, so we request that you send us digital photos showing the damage to the prints and package.

Shipping

How much will shipping cost?

Standard ground shipping using either USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground is free to all US states. We’ll choose the ground shipping method based on price and shipping location. If you have a preference between USPS and UPS for your ground shipping, include a note (on the shopping cart page) when you check out.

For shipping upgrades, APO, or international shipping the final shipping cost of your order will depend on the overall size and weight of your prints. You can estimate shipping costs on the shopping cart page.

For shipping to international destinations, please note that you may need to pay additional customs fees before your package is delivered.

What shipping methods are available?

We ship via the US Postal Service and UPS. For domestic shipments we ship via USPS Ground Advantage (shipping time: 2–5 days) or UPS Ground (shipping time: 1–5 days) for our default ground option. We also offer these shipping upgrades: USPS Priority Mail (shipping time: 2–3 days) or USPS Priority Mail Express (shipping time: 1–2 days). For international shipments we ship via USPS Priority Mail International (shipping time: 6–10 business days).

How long will it take to receive my order?

We usually process and print all orders within 1–2 business days. The shipping transit time is in addition to the order processing time, and will depend on which shipping service you select. Shipping transit times are shown when you select the shipping method on the shopping cart page and during the checkout process.

Do you offer expedited shipping?

If you need your order to arrive as soon as possible you may upgrade to USPS Priority (2–3 days shipping time) or USPS Priority Express (1–2 days shipping time) during checkout. Priority Express is an overnight service to many locations in the US, but please note that for most orders we usually ship 1–2 business days after the order is placed. If you're really in a rush, please contact us before placing your order to see if we can ship out your order the same day.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to destinations in the United States and Canada. For destinations in Canada, please note that you may need to pay additional customs fees before your package is delivered.

How are the prints packaged?

We ship all prints flat in sturdy flat packaging or in boxes. We do not ship any prints rolled in tubes. Each print comes in a clear, archival sleeve for protection. You should keep your print in this sleeve until you are ready to frame it.

The shipper will ask for proof of damage, so we request that you send us digital photos showing the damage to the prints and packaging.
