About This Map
Originally published in his 1627 atlas of the world, this seventeenth century map of the world by John Speed includes numerous inset illustrations showing astronomical subjects (such as solar and lunar eclipses and northern and southern constellations), the four classical elements (water, earth, fire, and air), and portraits of explorers (Drake, Cavendish, Magellan, and van Noort).
