About This Map

Map of Belgium and the Netherlands shown as a lion. Beginning in 1583, maps depicting the Low Countries, or Netherlands, as a lion began to be increasingly popular among Dutch mapmakers. During the Dutch revolt against the Spanish between 1566 and 1648, the lion became a symbol of the Dutch republic and later the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These maps were both statements of political protest as well as symbols of the increasing power and wealth of the Dutch during this period.
